Engineering Supervisor

Location

Based in the UK (currently located in Eckington, Worcestershire, UK) with the requirement for frequent travel to Europe, Middle East, India, Africa and the UAE, as well as other areas as and when required.

Key Skills and Requirements

  • A good knowledge of radio frequency systems. This will entail an understanding of EM propagation, the frequency spectrum, signal structure, associated electronic components and microwave operation and installation practices.
  • An understanding and working knowledge of digital signal processing and familiarity with electronic engineering items such as PCBs, IP rated enclosures, wire gauges, cabling processes and associated installation techniques.
  • An understanding of transmission line theory and time domain reflectometry.
  • Conversant with IT and computer network terms and applications, including those relating to interconnectivity of devices, routing of TCP/IP data and current technology such as fibre optic cabling and POE systems.
  • Aptitude for performing research, system diagnostics and fault finding into problem areas. These can arise at a practical level when working in extreme environments, such as harsh weather conditions.
  • Required to design new and sometimes novel systems and equipment to aid the sale of Southwest Microwave’s product range, with consideration to the cost, supply of materials, market needs and feasibility of manufacture.
  • Proficient in the use of appropriate software, such as AutoCAD/Microsoft Visio to prepare sketches, drawings and specifications detailing materials and functions required.
  • Suitable skills to provide technical consultancy to a range of audience sizes an  types, providing reports, presentations and notes.
  • Good presentation skills are essential to convey product and system knowledge to attendees on internal and external training courses, during meetings and seminars and during attendance at various trade shows worldwide
  • Appropriate technical or engineering qualification, ideally at degree level or comparable. They must have at least 4 years’ experience of working in a PIDS (perimeter intrusion detection) role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce quotations detailing the technical scope, selected equipment, pricing and notes on any supporting services.
  • Interact with clients, suppliers, etc. in a professional manner whether face-to-face, on the telephone or through multimedia systems such as emails.
  • Problem solving faulty systems, advise on correct selection of equipment and give guidance to internal problem solving.
  • Produce regular monthly reports of activities, site visit reports and technical responses in email format.
  • Oversee the running and maintenance of a product test and demonstration area used for training, VIP visits and product development and testing.
  • Qualifying systems at clients’ sites to secure potential sales of products.
  • Provide both technical advice, engineering updates and commercial support for the Southwest Microwave business and to its existing and potential customer and client base.
  • To be fully conversant with the technical, operational, installation and service aspects of the Southwest Microwave Systems. This means having a clear in depth understanding of both the perimeter intrusion detection systems, project management, customer quotation and the commercial supply process so that all of these functions can be performed proficiently and to the satisfaction of Southwest Microwave.
  • To become conversant with technical data sheets and technical manuals and is able to recall this information at critical instances, such as at meetings, presentations, training or during phone conversations and supporting emails.
  • The ability to work as the sole representative of the company when required.
  • To prepare demonstration equipment and install at seminars and exhibitions worldwide. This includes exhibition stand manning for the period of the show.
  • Organising the return of customer defective equipment for investigation and repair or replacement. This can include fault diagnosis of the returned equipment, repair and testing if required.
  • To be responsible for the Technical Support Engineers.
  • Carrying out site surveys, trials and demo systems in conjunction with our customers and integrators.
  • To be responsible for customer training courses as required.
  • To communicate efficiently and effectively within the Southwest Microwave organisation and to all customers and clients. This involves the use of written and verbal communications including face to face discussions, meetings and presentations using whatever presentation methods and materials are deemed the most suitable. This will include but is not limited to CRM, PowerPoint, Excel, Word, AutoCAD and the use of a polite telephone manner and standard company documentation where available.
  • To adhere to Non-Disclosure and Confidentiality Agreements in place between Southwest Microwave and clients.
  • The post holder must maintain business integrity and confidentiality during their employment or in the event that you leave Southwest Microwave.
  • These duties may be revised at any time as directed by the General Manager and in agreement with the post holder.

Essential Competencies

  • Appropriate technical or engineering qualification, ideally at degree level or comparable. Must have at least 4 years’ experience of working with PIDS
  • Excellent comprehension of the English language both written and spoken
  • Good knowledge of radio frequency systems Familiarity with electronic engineering Confident with Technology and IT software
  • Confidence to effectively communicate and present at all levels within an organisation
  • Articulate speaker
  • Customer Service/Sales skills
  • Strong IT skills including Microsoft office skills: Word; Excel; PowerPoint
  • Analytical skills and experience of preparing accurate technical reports
  • Freedom to travel extensively across Europe and the Southwest Microwave defined Middle East region and UK territories
  • Must maintain a valid passport that allows free travel within the European and Middle Eastern regions
  • Valid full driving license

Desirable Competencies

  • Multi-lingual
  • Experienced in using Customer Relationship Management systems (SalesLogix)
  • Awareness of import and export procedures
