About SMI Microwave Products Division

Southwest Microwave, Inc. (SMI) is a privately held Arizona corporation. The company has built its reputation through the design, manufacture and sale of proprietary high performance microwave products.

ORIGIN

SMI was incorporated in 1981 to develop microwave sensors for intrusion alarm applications. Several sophisticated new sensors were developed and SMI's Security Systems Division became the world's leading manufacturer of exterior microwave intrusion sensors. In 1987, SMI established the Microwave Products Division (MPD) and began production of high performance microwave connectors for millimeter wave applications.

PRODUCTS

SMI has developed families of microwave connectors, including Super SMA (27 GHz, 165(C), 3.5mm, 2.92mm, 2.40mm, N, TNC, and SSMA. SMI connectors are used in most major military, aerospace and advanced commercial systems. Unique transition designs used in SMI connectors minimize transmission loss and reflections. Superior connector performance enables customers to meet otherwise restrictive program requirements. SMI has established an internal ěproduct philosophyî whereby the Company will provide only highest performing interconnect assemblies. Standard catalogue items are traceable to raw material, materials are NASA approved for space outgassing, and only proven top-level products are offered.

MANAGEMENT

MPD is managed by a team of experienced professionals with records of success in microwave product design, development, hi-rel applications, and production. Key managers include:

Richard McCormick. President, SMI. Mr. McCormick is a founder of SMI and has been President and CEO since its inception in 1981. Prior to founding SMI, Mr. McCormick was General Manager of M/A-Com Omni Spectra's Cable Assembly Division. Mr. McCormick received a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University.

James Kubota. V.P. of SMI and Director of Technology for MPD. Prior to joining SMI, Mr. Kubota was Vice President of Microwave Products for Gilbert Engineering Company of Phoenix, Arizona and Vice President of Engineering for M/A-Com Omni Spectra. Mr. Kubota previously was General Manager of MPD and now focuses full-time on new product engineering and development. Mr. Kubota received a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan. Mr. Kubota joined Omni Spectra in 1962 as a Microwave Engineer and developed microwave components, including directional couplers, detectors, terminations and SMA connector test systems, such as slotted lines, tuners, adapters, etc. Mr. Kubota performed detailed analysis of connector parameters, which contributed to industry acceptance of the SMA connector as the primary connector for microwave coaxial products.

David Shaff. General Manager of MPD (also serving as Director of Sales and Marketing, MPD). Mr. Shaff brings considerable interconnect experience to Southwest Microwave. Prior management positions include engineering, sales/marketing and operations at ITT Cannon, NEC (JAE Electronics), SV Microwave, Avnet Electronics, and Semflex, Inc. Professional memberships include IEEE, SAE, and IICIT. Mr. Shaff received his Engineering degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology and also earned the MIBA degree.

Vincent McHenry. Director, SMI. Mr. McHenry is a founder of SMI and serves as an engineering consultant to both divisions, contributing significantly to the design and manufacturing technology of their products. Prior, he was a founder and Vice President of Omni Spectra, Inc. Mr. McHenry hold 19 patents in the microwave field.

James Cheal. Director, SMI. Mr. Cheal is a founder of SMI and also serves as a consultant to both divisions, contributing significantly to new product research and development. Prior, he was founder, Vice President and Director of M/A-Com Omni Spectra. In 1985, Mr. Cheal received the IEEE Microwave Applications Award.

These professionals are supported by experienced technicians and staff assigned to the design, manufacturing and test of all connector products.

FACILITIES

In 1999, SMI moved into a new 50,000 sq. ft. building in Tempe, Arizona. Many of the world's leading semiconductor and high technology firms are nearby, providing a supportive local environment. Our modern facility houses a computer-aided design group, extensive prototype/machining capabilities, programmable environmental chambers, automatic microwave test laboratory and precision inspection systems. Customer visits and surveys are welcome.
