INTREPID Tips For Smooth Operation

Sometimes people get too close to their work to see the big picture. Solving a particular technical problem can be difficult, but if you step back and look at it from a different perspective, the solution becomes obvious.

Mickey Bellot is someone who has looked at industrial security from a variety of perspectives. Working as the industrial security manager for Royal Services of Broussard, Louisiana, Bellot has been a security systems integrator for 17 years.

“We specialize in homeland security projects around chemical plants and refineries,” Bellot says. “We’ve done work with a variety of facilities, including Dow, BASF and DuPont.”

Bellot has used Southwest Microwave perimeter security products for more than 14 years. He has quite a bit of experience installing Southwest Microwave’s INTREPID™ outdoor perimeter security system. The INTREPID MicroPoint system is a fence-mounted intrusion detection system that can pinpoint a disturbance on the perimeter within 10 feet (3 meters). Bellot integrates the INTREPID system with CCTV cameras so they automatically point to an alarm disturbance.

“We can also do that with external alarm devices, wireless devices and some of the other microwave sensors that are tied into the INTREPID system,” Bellot adds. “So this gives our customers precise location of an alarm and the camera automatically points there immediately.”

Bellot has found several shortcuts and best practices that he implements for his customers with the INTREPID system. Here are a few of his tips:

1. Install your processor module inside a building or guardhouse: This simple method eliminates having to run excess power or data. It also provides a nice controlled environment to tie in your relay modules, and it’s easier to achieve proper grounding. In some cases, just moving the processor module a few feet into the guardhouse will make installation a whole lot easier.

2. Use USB ports with DB9 connectors: Using these connectors makes it easier to connect the processor modules into the computer. This is especially useful because computers are now being manufactured with more and more USB ports and less serial ports.

3. Use pcAnywhere™ for remote access with multiple sites: Southwest Microwave’s com port boxes work great with one site. However, when monitoring multiple locations, pcAnywhere software makes remote access simple and efficient.

4. Backup your data: This may seem obvious, but making sure your data is backed up is crucial to a successful system. Making sure computers have CD burners is key, but memory sticks and other portable memory devices also work well.

These tips are meant to help security consultants and security systems integrators get the most out of the INTREPID MicroPoint system. If you have any questions about this article, please e-mail Mickey Bellot at mickey@royalservices or call Southwest Microwave at 1-800-587-5995.
